Today’s High Court ruling will allow a Singaporean illegally detained to sue for damages later, his lawyer says. KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today declared that the immigration department’s detention of a Singaporean man for 29 days three years ago was unlawful.

Wong Chun Khuen was detained by immigration authorities for harbouring illegals but was not produced before a magistrate.

Justice Datuk Dr Hamid Sultan Abu Backer, a judge of the Court of Appeal Malaysia, an adjunct professor in many universities locally and abroad and a renowned international jurist, introduced an innovative concept of dispute resolution to cater for the poor, needy and oppressed, called University cum Court Annexed Arbitration in 2017.
